Arabic courses at the beginning and intermediate levels taught at the SLI provide the equivalent of an academic year's worth of study. Classes meet on the University of Pittsburgh campus, Monday - Friday from 9am to 3pm. In addition to intensive language classes, students also attend Arabic films, lectures on politics and culture, singing classes, and cooking classes. Students will learn Modern Standard Arabic and the Levantine dialect.

Cultural Programs: 

SLI domestic programs include a robust program of cultural activities centering around food, music, art, film, and movement culture of the SLI language regions.

Students may select to live in the dormitories (approx. $33/night) or locate an apartment to sublet.

Note: The cost of accommodations and meals are not included in the program cost.

Funding Opportunity: 

Summer Language Institute Scholarships:
$1,000 to a maximum award of $5,000

Complete the SLI Scholarship Questionnaire on the application and include a letter of recommendation from a professor or professional supervisor with your application.

You may apply for admission to SLI until May 1, 2020, but if you seek an SLI scholarship, you should apply as soon as possible as funds may be reduced or depleted later in the spring. You may reach out to us at any time at to inquire about openings and funding for your program.

Program Fee: 

$6,208 + university fees (approx. $260)

Note: Cost does not include accommodations or meals. Applicants who are not currently enrolled at Pitt will have to pay a additional $45 fee after acceptance but before enrolling in order to get set up with a student account.
