Students are encouraged to apply for scholarship funding to attend the Summer Language Institute. ROTC students applying for a Project GO scholarship must submit their applications by January 17, 2017. Scholarships for select classes are still available. A number of full and partial tuition scholarships made available with generous funding from the Croatian Scholarship fund, the Center for Russian and East European Studies, and the Summer Language Institute. Applicants will be rated according to their demonstrated academic achievements and statement of purpose. Proof of financial need is not required, but students may mention relevant special circumstances at the end of their statement of purpose.
How to apply: Simply check the applicable box on your SLI application and be sure that the required 2 letters of recommendation have been submitted to firstname.lastname@example.org on your behalf. Applications are due March 3, 2017.
FLAS fellowships provide students 100% tuition scholarships and a $2500 stipend. Students traveling on an SLI abroad program are responsible for the $1000 study abroad fee. Applicants will be rated according to their demonstrated academic achievement, statement of purpose on the SLI application, and 2 letters of recommendation submitted to email@example.com.
How to apply: Simply complete the SLI application and this form. Applications are due March 3, 2017. If you wish to have your FLAS application considered for a possible advantage based on financial need, please be aware that it may take up to 3 weeks to receive your Student Aid Report after you file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
University of Pittsburgh’s Center for Russian and East European Studies offers Project GO scholarships to ROTC students pursuing Russian or Turkish. Students may be at any level of Russian language study (1st-4th year) or going into 1st year Turkish. Beginning level students will take Russian or Turkish in SLI’s 8-week intensive program held at the University of Pittsburgh. Students prepared to enter the 2nd or 3rd-year classes in Russian will enroll in an 8-week Pitt program held at Narva College of the University of Tartu in Narva, Estonia. Narva is a predominantly Russian-speaking city located on the Estonian-Russian border.
Scholarships are comprehensive: 100% tuition funding; 100% travel costs from home city to program location, including any necessary visa fees; and 100% room and board. Applications are available here and due January 17, 2017.
The Vira I. Heinz (VIH) Program for Women in Global Leadership offers scholarships of at least $5,000 for a summer international experience as well as structured leadership development retreats and a Community Engagement Experience to women of sophomore and junior status with no previous international experience. Students enrolling in Slovak language classes in the Summer Language Institute are eligible to receive a $1000 scholarship through the Thomas Kukucka Fund. Preference will be given to Pitt students who have studied Slovak in the regular academic year, and/or who plan to study Slovak at Pitt the following Fall semester. Second preference is graduate students from Pitt or other institutions with research interests in Slovakia. In the absence of Pitt students and graduate students with research interests in Slovakia, all others with research or an academic interest in Slovakia will be considered.
How to apply: simply answer “yes” to Number 14, “Are you interested in applying for a SLI scholarship,” on the SLI application and include explanation of your Slovak study and/or research plans in your State of Purpose and Future Goals essay.
